How Indeed Uses Karat
The Indeed Karat screen follows the standard 60-minute format: introduction, domain questions, and approximately 40 minutes of live coding.
Domain questions may touch on general software engineering concepts. Given Indeed's core focus on search and recommendation, candidates occasionally report domain questions about how search ranking works at a high level, or how you would design a simple data structure for fast lookups. These remain conceptual — no implementation required in the domain segment.
The coding segment uses Karat's standard three-part progressive structure. Indeed does not customize the Karat problem set. Difficulty is consistent with other Karat client companies (easy-to-medium). The assessment prioritizes correctness and clear communication.
Role Levels & What to Expect by Level
Indeed uses Karat for software engineering roles across backend, frontend, data, and platform engineering. Based on candidate reports, Karat is used for a range of levels from new graduate through senior SWE. More senior and specialized roles may use a different process — confirm with your recruiter.

- Search-related patterns: Given Indeed's product focus, domain questions may reference inverted indexes or ranking at a conceptual level. The coding problem is standard Karat, but string and collection problems have a natural fit with Indeed's domain.
- Two-pointer and sliding window: Appears in Part 2 variants of collection problems.
- BFS on graphs: Occasionally appears for connectivity or shortest-path problems at the easy-to-medium level.

No. The Karat screen assesses general software engineering skills, not Indeed-specific domain knowledge. Domain questions are general software engineering conceptual questions. Job search, ranking, or recommendation systems knowledge is not required.
Candidates who pass the Karat screen typically move to technical phone screens and/or virtual onsite rounds with Indeed engineers. The process varies by role and team. Your recruiter will outline the subsequent steps.
